CHALLENGE: Music Pixelizer

Create an abstract representation of a specific piece of music (don't forget to mention what it is!).

As the challenge calls for an abstract piece, avoid identifiable physical objects (no living beings, household items, eggplants, etc...). Try to capture the feelings the music provokes when listening to it; think in terms of patterns; shapes; colours; and, of course, pixel clusters.

Keep in mind that abstract should not be taken to mean excessively simple minimalism. You should put as much effort into this challenge as you would with any other.

For some inspiration: An abstract music visualizer for iTunes.

Optional Bonus Challenge: Create an animated piece that is in time with the music.

Canvas Size - Exactly 128 x 72. Either horizontal or vertical.
Colours - Max 12.
Transparency - No.
Animation - Optional.

This is what I came up with. The background song is Lateralus by Tool.

I think i might try to animate this.

This is a chunk of the lyrics that inspired the color and shapes:

Black then white are all I see in my infancy.
red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me.
lets me see there is so much more
and beckons me to look through to these infinite possibilities.

The song has also a strong mathematical pattern that "spirals out". You can learn more about the Fibonacci sequence in the song from wikipedia :)

I made this while listening to Carmichael's "Stardust". There are many versions of the song, this one is the closest I could fint in the Internet to the one I was inspired by: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPQnkyhBgps

So here is my drawing:

I translated the "old jazz" feeling of the song into a sort of Art Deco image

Hi everyone, i'm new arround here, when it says 12 colors, is it in total (with the shading and everything)or is it the ammount of colors we can use (so like if green was one of them would dark green and light green be another two colors)?

Sorry for being noob, just figured i asked xD

@MafGomez, in pixelart every shade counts including transparency. 12 colors means 12 colors even if all 12 are greens.

This is absolute evil!

Gonna try a song from Kavinsky (Odd Look remix), but got only one instrument so far... small wip with this endless "tuh-duh-duh" electronic sound

This is an update to the image plus some little animation.
This is the first time I try animation, and I don't think i'll submit the animated version as animating the fire would take me a load of time.

Anyway, hints on framerate/layers/loops etc are appreciated :)

@all, please note this part of the challenge:
'the challenge calls for an abstract piece, avoid identifiable physical objects (no living beings, household items, eggplants, etc...).

@MafGomez hats, hearts, buildings, musical notes.

@Joseki, eyeball fixed

@quervo, that's nice.

Got this WIP; I'm pretty happy with the focal point, but I'm not entirely sure what should go around it (I want the cream-colored stuff to sort of look like it flows, as if it were something somewhere between water and mist). The song is Infected Mushroom - Wanted To

A WIP. I like the line art and colors, but am unsure of what to add to the background. C&C welcomed.

8 Colors.

EDIT: This would probably look pretty cool animated...;)

Another first post. I also haven't really focused on pixel pieces before (though I've certainly worked with pixels), but I've always had an interest, which is growing.

Original inspiration was to be Cate Le Bon's "Are You With Me Now?", but then I refreshed myself on "Serve the Servants" for quervo's piece, so Nirvana crept in as I started the piece, followed by "My Name" and "Going Places" by Starflyer 59, "Mature Themes" and "Only In My Dreams" by Ariel Pink, and I finally got some Cate playing again; "AYWMN?" and "Duke". I was also inspired by some actual abstract paintings I saw recently from a former classmate. So, it represents that variety at least.

This is representative of my general style and effort level, I hope it doesn't offend.
