are there any sort of guidelines on how the doom enemies look, like a design guide or something? i never played it, so it my understanding of the enemy design are is poor.

AFAIK many doom sprites began as clay figurines that were later digitized and retouched so there's usually a lot of details on them. This is a perfect challenge for me to do. The reason why I haven't posted much art is because I'm feeling too lazy to make a palette, and, lucky for me, this challenge gives a palette to use.

Apart from zombified humans, typical Doom enemies are :
- creatures that look like different species of Hell's demons. They use raw physical strength (teeth and claws) or intrinsic quasi-magical powers, like flying, throwing fireballs, being invisible. - demons designed (or transformed) to incorporate human technology and weapons. There are more of those in Doom 2 than Doom 1, though. |

Adrian Carmack made clay models of a few of them, including the Doom Marine (whose sprite was also used as a base for the humanoid enemies) the Cyberdemon, Demon (pinky) and the Baron of Hell, not sure about the Lost Soul and the Imp (Imp might be also edit of the Doom Marine). The Cacodemon is pretty much a copy of the head of a monster on some AD&D rulebook. All the other monsters are edits of these (Pain elemental being an edit of the Cacodemon, Hellknights just colourswaps of the Barons) or based on posable sculptures by Gregor Punchatz. I personally do not think that pixelart is a good approach to try and make a monster that really fits in with the original Doom lineup. Possible but tedious, especially if you would go for rotations. In any case I would say look at the original sprites very closely, do not use any dither on sprites, generally have very smooth gradientswith a base light that is top down. Hugeass image with all doom monster sprites and some more stuff like player and such that I have compiled quite a while ago for a test when I was helping in a project with refining the palette. Yeah, most of those sprites have a ton of colors on them. I assume this challenge more or less expects us to make better, more pixel-friendly versions that none-the-less fit the monster design. Hence the palette limitation.

Note that the original was in VGA, ie. 320x200 displayed on a 4:3 screen. This means the pixels are supposed to be slightly tall, this is why they look slightly "squished" in the rips.

Also, sprites that are not quite soft shaded tend to look not that great in the Doom engine, because of how the lighting works. |

In Doom graphics are displayed 20% taller, might be a useful bit of information for creating a Doom sprite.

Mrmo, I think your Cthulhu is WAY too big to be actually useful in-game.
Maybe it could be nice if your sprites could be actually used by mappers, if animated... At least you could try to use the right sizes, like the actual monsters that I've posted. They are used in actual fan made maps. Just throwing suggestions, don't take it bad... |

Besides the size there's something that is bugging me in your sprite. Maybe it's the palette. I know the palette is fixed but, what do you think of doing him in more greenish tones, like this one? ![]() This is cool. Green but lit in blue from the ground. |

This is how my submission's looking so far. It's a Femancubus with BFG arms. A haven't yet figured out what kind of hair/hair replacement to give her yet, and I also have to give her some kind of mecha-bra, or something.

You could boost the contrast on the piece to make it more readable... it took me a while to see the mouth.
