you should check the anatomy of the chest; the nips are too close togehter and the lines(collar bone?) under his neck don't make sense. His forearm is very long as well. Try to define the contours of his muscularture with your shading a bit more.
no real design crits other than maybe a bit more colouring in the wings, and the clouds as commented before, just anatomy stuff.
The clouds were fairly rushed when I did it, but I can see why you'd think it's a colour reduction.
I could revise the clouds if you wish, but I mainly went for a totally different style (i.e. dithering) to separate the background from the character itself. If you think I should have done a more blocky detailing style to match the character, do say so, I'd be willing to do that. I just used it as a practice to get better.
Did you actually hand pixel the clouds or did you use some kind of colour reduction?
The clouds look very different to the main character (different style, different level of detail, different texture etc...), there are several stray pixels floating around and the dithering patterns are extremely strange.
Quite awkward really, but on a photo that still remains on my phone from outside my window.
Even if the clouds were indeed purely done by hand, the problem then exists that they come off as being extremely poorly made. I'll direct you to some good examples of pixeled clouds - [1] [2] and of course [3]. Now look at your clouds, I notice that they seem to randomly contain some weird vertical lines within the dithering, there are several stray pixels, some extremely similar colours are used and there's a very unusual mix of dithering patterns. If you consciously decided to dither like this then I also caution that doing so will not "[enhance your] ability to do dithering". Keep in mind that there are plenty of tutorials out there.
I also find it very suspect that you won't upload your reference pic (I'm sure your phone is capable of somehow transferring data to a computer); you show no WIP stages of creating the clouds; you mention yourself that you can see why I would think it is a colour reduction, without offering an explanation as to why I shouldn't think that - beyond it being rushed - and indeed if it were rushed, colour reduction would be an ideal solution; finally, I can't deny the overall similarity to the Floyd-Steinberg dithering algorithm - notice in the example they give of David, most notably both your image and their example share a similar juxtaposition of single pixels and vertical lines, which is something I have never seen outside of colour reductions.
Keep in mind that dithering by hand, when done well, will always yield better results than any colour reduction. An algorithm is just that, and it will simply try and produce a pattern that is 'good enough' for any image. It can not understand the nuances of specific images in the way a human can.
So anyway, regardless of the situation, I still want you to change the clouds. And it would be good too if you took some of Randommonkies' advice too. Therefore I'm sending this back for revision. I look forward to seeing a much improved version of this image.
