Thanks for the feedback! I did actually think about adding additional frames to the walk cycle, but my friend is making the game mostly by herself, and more frames adds a significant art burden over a large number of sprites. In this case, ease of creation is more important than it looking as good as it can, I think.

Moving the legs closer together is an interesting idea. I'll give it a shot and run it by her.

Yeah, a big problem I'm trying to contend with is how it's going to display on different screens. I'm using MonoGame, and the idea is to get it to run on just about everything, but high-res tablets and such are becoming more and more common, and 4k monitors are on the horizon. The game is gonna need to be blown up pretty substantially. So I feel like if I pixel the tiles too, it's going to look weird if there's any non-pixel art in the entire game, like portraits or menus or even fonts. There have been a few professional games that used sprites against non-pixel art backgrounds, and it doesn't look too bad, I guess. I might be able to get away with calling it style or something.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback!

Thanks! I'll be doing 3/4 perspective, although I'm actually still struggling to figure out what I'm going to do for tiles. I've been down the road of trying to do 100% pixel graphics I personally made for a game in addition to all of the writing, design, and programming, and I don't care to do it again. I'm considering painting them since it's a lot faster than spriting, but the style clash is a little odd, and it's still a lot of work.

I actually did a quick style test for painted tiles the other day:

So as you can see, it's a little weird, not to mention I'm way better at pixels than painting. I don't think I can afford to put more time than that into them, though.

Lovely animation! Very smooth and cute. My only complaint is that it looks a little odd that the hair is mirrored when the skirt isn't.

I love the design and the palette, but it definitely needs more cleaning up imo.

Lovely work! The only thing is that the shadows being on top of the plants in the foreground really ruins the depth and makes the piece look flat. I might also decrease the difference in contrast between the sprites and the background. Great pixeling, though.

This is really cool! Strikes me as Lovecraftian. Can't wait to see what it looks like finished. :)

Cool! Very creative, and I like the colors and the musculature.

Yeah, it was either post it like this or not post it at all, and it's been so long since I posted something that I wanted to. I've got some half-completed big pieces I've been sitting on for a while, and it's kinda frustrating to not be able to post them, which I guess is why I uploaded this. I know it has a lot of problems but don't want to work on it anymore.

And yes, it's the same sky.

The desk is actually a touchscreen display, so those are virtual documents.

Thanks for the compliments, everyone!

That's some great animation work! Very smooth. Nice job! Only crit is that the idle animation could use some subpixeling and maybe hair movement since the rest is so smooth, but I understand if you're moving onto other assets. Spriting a game is a lot of work!

I think I would've shown some of the bloody texture on the big sword, but it looks cool as an avatar too. The preview doesn't look bad per se; I just think it could advertise the piece better.

Cool! I like the blood pattern on the big one in particular. You did a great job with that. :) Only complaint is that the preview could be better. It's kind of confusing as is.

Cool challenge! Are you allowed to submit previously started pieces?

user
Perihelion @ 11/16/2011 07:05 commented on Apparatus Mockup v2

Yeah, it was more of a mockup that I was making to see if the tiles looked good together, and then I decided to animate it and put it on PJ because I had it. You're right, though, I probably should have thought about composition more. Thanks for the feedback, anyway!

user
Perihelion @ 11/14/2011 15:36 commented on Apparatus Mockup v2

Hmm, well, it was mainly supposed to be a mockup to show the tiles. Do you have any suggestions for additions or changes?

Just to set the record straight, this character is not supposed to be especially beautiful. She's supposed to look distinct first and foremost.

I really love the palette on this, but the dithering is really excessive and makes her skin look like sandpaper. Great job otherwise, though.

It's kind of a long story about the glasses, but I did do that on purpose. As for the shirt, yeah, I agree, but I'm prolly gonna repixel it (again), so oh well! Anyway, thanks.

It's too bad your art teacher didn't like it. I agree it's somewhat unrefined, but it's still a lovely bit of art. Nice concept!
