It's probably a bit too late to ask, but are you allowed to only use black and white?
I wonder how/why those colors were chose. I almost like this palette a lot despite the blue and purple being too close.
Nope, the max color are 8, so you can use 2, 3, 4...8 colors, but just those listed.
You can't use trasparency, but animations are allowed.
You should be happy that we didn't go with the even more saturated version from the Wikipedia article :o

These colours remind me of that Rubik's cube challenge, except in that you could add others as well
