Welcome to the whopping 10th PJ-Official ISO collab fellow members of Pixel Joint!

This time, the theme is decided by long term collab participants: Carnival! The idea is to combine a circus, a theme / amusement park and a zoo. But anything related goes, such as joyrides, parties, Chinese new year events or Rio carnival.

The carnival has hit the town!

Collab Rules, Specs, Notes and FAQ on Post 3 below

This project features Irenaart's award winning palette.
If you submit your tile to your PJ Gallery (which you should) you do not have to credit Irenaart but it would be nice of you.

Scale example:

Characters in the scale example are drawn by vierbit in one of the previous collabs.

This collab is being run by your fellow PJ moderators.

Previous ISO collabs ran by PJ:
ISO-ology, I SOak, I SO dead people, ISOtopes, ISOcalypse Now!, Pirates of the ISObbean, PrehISOria, Planet ISO, ISOrd & ISOrcery

Rules
- You can create more than one tile but your tile may not neighbor your own tile (even diagonally).
- Only one active tile reservation at any one time per participant. You must finish a tile before making a new one.
- Once you reserve a tile you must post an initial WIP within 4 days so it doesn't hold others up. 4 days pass quickly, so it is a good idea to post your WIP as soon as possible.
- Once you post an initial WIP you get 7 days to update your tile or post a comment letting us know its active. Every new WIP/post update (busy, school, work, sick, moving, etc.) thereafter buys you another 7 days. This period is given so that you don't have to rush it, try not to forget your reservation.
- Outer tiles MUST use transparency to 'break the grid' (See the last collab edges HERE).
- Inner tiles CAN NOT use transparency.
- You must use the supplied palette colors (19) only, but you don't have to use them all in your tile (Those making outer tiles will have one extra color for transparency).
- NO animations.
- Your tile must match the tiles surrounding yours, unless your tile has no neighbors (up to first 10 tiles). This will become increasingly tougher as tiles get added. Some tiles will need to match on as many as 4 sides.
- Matching your neighbors does not mean it has to continue their idea/concept. Just that it blends seamlessly somehow. Note that this doesn't mean you're supposed to destroy your neighbors' ideas. Stay within the collab spirit!
- Please keep the collab's general light-source and scale as shown below consistent in your tile. This may be tweaked in your tile if you use secondary light sources.
- Please post your tile on its own as a comment and make sure to say what number it is and it will be added to the collab master image by a Collab Manager in order to keep the color palette true.
- Your tile may be added to the master image in WIP stages if it shows the tile's direction enough to help others visualize their own tiles.

Special Rules
- The first 10 tiles may be anywhere (but the borders) and require no neighboring tiles. If you pick one of these first 10 tiles, please try to finish your tile a.s.a.p. in order to open up space for others.
- From the 11th tile on (or once a finished tile has been put into place) your new tile reservations MUST have at least one neighboring (a diagonal neighbor is not enough except for border tiles) tile already posted that your tile blends into.
- In the event that a tile is made without a reservation or 2 people accidentally work on the same tile a special vote may be held, or a duel to the death may be started by the 2 people.
- Special rule(s) may be added to accommodate whatever loophole y'alls manage to find and exploit.

Special request from Gecimen: Let us have some means of contacting you in case you forget your reservation. The most common way is setting your PJ account to email you whenever you receive a PM.

Notes
- Novice or pro, all are encouraged to collaborate.
- If you are new to collabs and you aren't sure how it will turn out, please consider claiming an inner tile, rather than a border tile, since the latter takes a lot more effort.
- Possible tile rejection if your tile is not in isometric projection or fails in scale.
- Possible tile rejection if your tile does not match and blend into your neighbor(s) tile.
- Possible tile rejection if your tile's concept defies the collab theme.
- Possible tile rejection if your tile just doesn't blend in with some degree of harmony. Should this happen to you check for comments left for you... there will be some!
- You can get tips and help to improve your tile on this thread. No need to make a separate WIP thread.
- You are encouraged to take all c+c on your tile. You do not need to apply all given c+c but please don't ignore them. Especially from your neighbor. Remember this is a 'collaboration'.
- Please use Yanrishatum's upgraded 'PJ Image Specs' tool HERE to check your final tile colors has max 19 colors (+ transparency, 20 if an outer tile) and the right colors.

FAQ:
Q: Can I extend my tile over someone else's tile?
A: No. You can only ask them to edit their own tile, and if they don't, you'll have to find another way. The only exception is border tiles where you can slightly extend over your neighbor's transparent space (for continuity reasons).
Note: "your neighbor's transparent space" means you do have an existing neighbor tile.

Q: If I have a border tile, can I extend my tile further than the border of the collab image?
A: Yes. We will enlarge the collab image as required. As with everything, be reasonable on this (don't put a 100 px long tentpole just for the sake of enlarging the image size). Here are some examples of border tiles from PrehISOria (tiles belong to S.g.m., Gecimen, Night, Vierbit):

Q: What can I do if I want to draw something really big?
A: If you want to draw something that will take more than a tile, you can draw a lineart sketch and ask people to join your "mini collab". If it's something interesting, you will certainly find people. Then you do your own part and let other people do their own thing. Everyone can add their own taste into their own tiles. You can check previous collabs for mini collabs.

Q: Can somebody else finish my tile from where I left?
A: No. We may allow this under very special circumstances (e.g. health) but normally unless you want to finish your tile, you have to give up on it.

Q: Is it OK to drop my reservation? Will I be banned?
A: Not at all. You can drop your reservations as many times as you want.

Q: I can't reach a certain quality. What should I do?
A: Collabs are great for this. You can work on your neighbor tiles, listen to criticism, and start over as many times as you want. What matters most is you to be satisfied, and learn in the process. As long as we see you have given your best effort and your tile meets the criteria such as continuity, theme, lighting, scale & perspective; we will accept it.

Q: Can I use some existing pixels in my tile?
A: No, even if it was made by you. Everything in your tile must be made for this collab, by yourself.

Q: When I reserve a tile, do I need confirmation by mods to begin working on it?
A: Confirmation by mods may take upto 24 hours. So, if you are sure of these, you can begin working without confirmation.
1- your previous tile (if any) is finished,
2- you haven't made a neighboring tile previously,
3- the same tile is not claimed by someone else (check out the reservation table & latest posts),
4- the tile has a completed neighboring tile by someone else (except for first 10 tiles).

Welcome to the CarnISOl!

New rule: first 10 tiles that can be picked anywhere, now can not be picked from the borders since they are supposed to give the collab a quick start. Border tiles not only take longer to complete, but also have less neighbors than inner tiles.

@everyone; Okay, just a quick note, there was a little inaccuracy with the older palette template, so if you use that image for your work, please, download it again. The problem is now solved.

Reo mentioned that one of the aspects that made the last collab successful was the large buildings - to that end, would anyone like to collab on large tent in the centre of the grid?

Maybe something like this (just as an example)?

@Mrpixeldude; sorry, you'll have to choose some other tile. #56 is a neighbor tile of now reserved tile #63.

@Krugelix; Ups, #55 is an adjacent tile of #63, so it is against the rules. Pick another one taking care not to touch any of the tiles already selected, not even at the top. Maybe some from the upper-right part?

I am quite new to pixel art but want to improve, not sure if I threading on deep water by joining this super cool project.

Thinking of taking #22 (or #37 since #14 was taken) with this as a WIP:

Not sure if I should seek pointers here or in another thread? Since it suppose to look like a Rhino. :P

And also, can I add this slide(blue thing up top) that would deeply affect the above tile or is that unfair?

@vrine, krugelix, b236 going amazing!

@Terzom, welcome to the collab, you're at the right place to improve, many of us here learned a lot from older collabs. First off that slide is not unfair at all. The rhino does look like a rhino but it's a little too small for the scale, a rhino afaik is 2 meters tall and 4 meters long. This is probably a baby rhino. Also try to make the leg positions isometric. The major problem with the tile is the ground doesn't have texture so it looks kinda plastic. Try to check out older collabs (in the first post) for ground textures.

@Mrpixeldude, going well. Two major things, first off, as I said to Terzom, ground texture is more or less a must for your neighbors to continue your tile. Secondly, the isometric perspective is not optional here (very important for overall harmony) and humans and animals are also supposed to be isometric.

For both of you, Prehisoria has a lot of great isometric animals.

@Mrpixeldude; It still looks quite unfinished. It's more like early WIP. The lion should be bigger and more isometric, add more texture on the ground (on both, grass and path), and you definitely have to add a shadow under the characters and objects taking into account where the shadow comes from, and that is the upper right corner. Also the upper part of the fence is completely flat. Try adding a darker surface to the left side.
You're on the right track. But don’t try to be done as quickly as you can, rather than dedicate some time to studying other people’s solutions for individual elements through previous collaborations. This is a great opportunity for your personal progress, don’t miss it. We all started here as inferior pixel graphic artists. But with enough effort and learning, we have progressed over time.

@Krugelix, @b236; Fantastic jobs!

Okay,... we have one more tile for reservation. Who wants it?

On the large structures front, my plan is to do a carousel/merry-go-round (since it's usually the first thing you build in RollerCoaster Tycoon) but I wanted to check before going all in that nobody minds a seven-tile construction right off the bat.

I took the rough dimensions of a real one and sized it down a bit for convenience. I don't think it's possible to position it more efficiently so it covers fewer tiles.

If you're all happy then I'll press on rendering my portion of it.

@cjlm123 I'm happy to collaborate on a large tent once I've done my first tile.

@Krugelix Nice! The orca looks great and I love the reference. Haven't seen that film for years.

@b236 Looking good!

@vrine Your tile looks great! I'll try to pick up the direction markers in some of my tiles because that's a great touch. Those bananas read really well too!

@Mrpixeldude, just pasting what Irena recommended you do "The lion should be bigger and more isometric, add more texture on the ground (on both, grass and path), and you definitely have to add a shadow under the characters and objects taking into account where the shadow comes from, and that is the upper right corner. Also the upper part of the fence is completely flat. Try adding a darker surface to the left side."

@Krugelix and vrine: Thanks! I'm hoping to have a WIP of my tile later tonight with an outline of the other parts. Trying to find a pleasing arrangement of supports and horses for it at the moment.

@Krugelix: Your tile looks great!

@Mrpixeldude: One thing that stands out to me is that the shadows of the people are being cast in different directions. Both shadows should be cast directly to the left as the light source is above and to the right of everything in the image. You could also add in a shadow for the lion and the fence to tie them more into the image.

I'd also be tempted to make the lion larger. Although Google tells me the length of an adult male lion varies from 5.6–8.3 ft, so the length of yours is just about okay relative to the people (albeit on the small end of the scale), it still feels like it could be more powerful. I think you could increase the size a bit without it seeming giant.

@vrine you can go on with one of Krugelix's neighbors.

@Krugelix, Free Willy :) Easter eggs coming already.

@Mrpixeldude, don't feel overwhelmed, take steps one by one. First off, For the isometric humans, here is a very good picture for you to take inspiration from.

Secondly here are some isometric lions.

@All; now that there are two complete tiles, please pick spots from their neighboring tiles!
