On the NES you can have 4 palettes for tiles. Each palette has 3 colours + 1 shared colour (in my case black).
And those tile palettes are applied on a 2x2 tile basis, so 16x16 pixel grid.
So usually I started with black and 2 greys for the base. That would allow me to be flexible when adding colour and filling in the 4th colour for each palette. Hope this makes sense.
Thanks everyone, glad you like them :)
Volrak: Made these over the course of one week. Most of the initial work is quite fast, working with 3 colours. Then polish adding the 4th colour and tile palettes. And tweaks, tweaks, tweaks. But yeah, lowcolour work in general is pretty fast for me nowadays.
i love these portrait sets! awesome every time. how long does it take you to make this?
So frigging cool! I need to learn how to use colors like that.
Yeah, you can tell it's ptoing just by looking at the preview image. Got this funky vibe going on. Kudos! Not that many artists have that instantly recognizable style.
So much style and pixel perfection everywhere.
I love, love, love them!
Thanks :)
I plan on coming this year. Would be nice, last one I been to was X'10 D:
wow - just wow!
as people said - one of your best! hope to meet you again at X'16!
More freedom compared to stuff like EGA and CGA or MSX for sure.
some of your best yet, in part because you seem to have a little more freedom with your palette.
Assembloids is already in development for the NES :) And we will add at least 1 additional mode.
Exclent! It's hard to select my favourite one - maybe it's the piggy-bat. But now do an Assembloids-II game :)
Das ist ne Fledermaus. Man merkt Du lebst in der Stadt, haha.
Yay Sven! I have really been looking forward to a new portrait collection from you. Your designs are always spot on and both interesting and funny. Also the colours are so nice here. These are all so good! I have so many faves out of them, haha. The bat tho... <3
Think this might be my favorite yet, just gorgeous. Now hurry up with those t-shirts and posters! I usually mention my favorites, but they're all lovely.
seeing the preview I expected an April fools entry. fooled :)
beautiful heads again. I loove the boar. one-eyed skull is a bit disturbing though :)
Mega 19: That differs quite a lot, and I did not time anything here. But I would guess between less than 1 to about 4 hours for some which had more revisions. These are all stream of consciousness. Starting with some weird shape, and then doing what comes to mind. And some of them changed quite a bit.
Forever will you be my favourite character designer on the site. Absolutely adore your portraits.
nice as always, how much time did it take to make each one?
Wonderful work! I appreciate that you're adhering to the system limitations too!
