I do not work for free and am also not a fan of speculative work.
Even tho I pixel for money I still like to pixel for fun mainly exploring restrictions. This is because I find working with restrictions interesting as they make you think and approach problems in ways you would not were you without the restricted ruleset. This then helps with things when you are working without restrictions as well :)
Lots of people ask me how I make my progress animation gifs which have 1000s of frames. I use Cosmigo Promotion which has a feature to generate an animation from undo buffer and also has virtually unlimited undo.
