This IS my favorite piece in Pixeljoint. The figure is just excellent and the treatment of the limited pallette is just wonderful. If it's okay with you Helm, I'm using it as wallpaper.

user

user
ptoing (Level 7 Cuttlefish) @ 2/11/2007 23:19
Skurwy87: Helm still has to do a ORIC picture. The ORIC has truely painfull limitations.

user
Quait (Level 1 Gangster) @ 2/10/2007 21:54
it's like it's on an eternal bloodlust in the void after death or something.

really, really epic. :DDDD

user
Skurwy87 (Level 6 Made) @ 2/5/2007 07:44
I'm really impressed by your out-of-the-ordinary creativity and patience, (and that you still can see after starring at those colours for a long time).

So, are there any limitations you haven't broken? Or maybe, are there any left to break? :)

I'm an agnostic but that is just GODLIKE! ;)

user
yuritakehashi (Level 1 Rookie) @ 12/27/2006 12:48

I look at this picture and i feel like The Spartan is a god.

user
Soup (Level 1 Rookie) @ 12/6/2006 14:04

I look at this picture if i feel like restricting colors is a bad idea. Kick ass.

user
Wannahlakujuu (Level 1 Rookie) @ 11/21/2006 15:39
Wow. Helm possesses angry proficiencies.

user
Helm (Level 5 Detective) @ 11/18/2006 10:08
Because black is absence of color. White is not.

user
ryumaru (Level 3 Private Eye) @ 11/17/2006 18:54
sorry for commenting on such an old piece of yours, but what was your reasoning for not using white? it seems if your gonna use black, then white should be included.

user
fr0st (Level 4 Killer Klown) @ 11/17/2006 07:41
fegging awsome use of colors, 5/5++ nice one :D

user

migoy (Level 1 Rookie) @ 9/8/2006 09:58
you guys, should look closely to it, its 4( FOUR) colors i see; Red,Green,Blue and Black. Gee! its basically the hardest skill to learn in pixel art. though a bit harsh on the eyes but its great!

user
Helm (Level 5 Detective) @ 9/4/2006 07:24
You are mistaken, jkilla. Check again.

user
jkilla (Level 1 Rookie) @ 9/3/2006 23:04
jsut amazing but i count six colors blue, violet, red, black(backround),and some od green color on his upper left chest.

user
=^D Guy (Level 3 Enforcer) @ 8/22/2006 20:14
This be PIXEL ART OF THE GODS. Plus, even four colors? Wow.

user
rabidbaboy (Level 4 Shichikyu) @ 8/3/2006 20:15
That's tops.
Anyone who doubts that Pixel Art is art should only look at your works, Helm.
His left elbow (the one nearest us) looks too wide, imo.
But I understand you're through with this piece.5/5

user
buloght (Level 6 Centaur) @ 7/30/2006 05:45
Scratch that, I see void is black.

user
buloght (Level 6 Centaur) @ 7/30/2006 05:41
Hmm, I haven't favourited this yet. I'll fix that. I was wondering, helm, why doesn't the black count as a colour?

Awesome work again

user
DesertFox (Level 1 Private) @ 7/29/2006 13:22
That is awesome.

user
Huggkruka (Level 1 Rookie) @ 7/28/2006 07:53

not a very appealing pixelart, yet good techniques used. legs seem a bit out of proportion. good work.

Mullet: good critique

Saboteur: I learnt a new form of dithering I never had much of a reason to use before this. It's a byproduct of the scanline thing. Ptoing started this whole deal by showing my a picture that seemed blue, by alternating 'scanlines' between two colors. After we decided that this was interesting, I had to try to use the scanlines, but also do dither gradiations into other colors without resorting to too much

standard 50% dithering patterns, as they went against the scanline effect. Not that I didn't end up using them anyway, but not predominantly.

So what I had to figure out is this sort of 'brick dither' effect you can see if you zoom in like on the helmet or chest. It's a very subtle effect, not a lot of brightness differentiation, but adds texture, interest and doesn't mess with the scanlines too much. The big payoff is of course, tinting.

Thanks for the interest, again. I am amazed a piece such as this fared as well as it did on pixeljoint. Although it didn't seem to get any 'x of the week' award or anything.

user
Mullet (Level 1 Jukyu) @ 6/26/2006 14:18
Looking back, there's one spot that bothers me. His right hands thumb, the one holding the flame sword, is seperated from the sword by only a line. It looks really out place, considering how every other spot is defined using shading, but that one line is used for the division there. Pardon the pun, but it sticks out like a sore thumb.

user
Saboteur (Level 4 Shichikyu) @ 6/26/2006 02:32
I'm gonna assume you do everything as a learning experience, because you're fucking godly at pixel art, and that can only come through either loads of practice or some well-aimed practice. This is nuts, basically, and I have but one question:
What did you learn about dithering (or whatever) while making this piece?

user
Mullet (Level 1 Jukyu) @ 6/23/2006 00:01
Wow. Helm, this isn't just a great piece, it's a masterpiece. The skill it would take to do this is well beyond me, and many others. Not only is the drawing interesting, and the lighting realisitic, but the sheer technique involved into transferring such a great piece of art to pixel art, let alone with a limit of rgbv, is dumbfounding. Major props, a favorite, and 5/5!

user
Kennethfejer (Level 1 Jukyu) @ 6/16/2006 14:09
absolutely awesome.
cant say anything bad about this piece.
its amazing to see what you can get out of those 4 colors.

Maybe you didn't need to know that.

user

I feel like i have to write something too. I love what you have done with the restrictions. Hope i can do something as good when i find the time to tackle this mode.

user

Thanks again, everybody. St0ven, I am honored.

user
E-Magination (Level 3 Sniper) @ 6/14/2006 08:50

Yeah, the leg is awesome.

user
st0ven (Level 2 Dealer) @ 6/13/2006 23:54
i havent had this much respect for a pixelated piece in a long time.  I can clearly see all of your techniques culminated into this fantastic work, but i think the most amazing part about this piece is the comprehension of color theory and how intimately balanced these colors can be when in close proximity to another. for some reason i am especially drawn to the leg, perhaps not only by the stronger contrast in that area, but also just the athletic, sleek musculature of the leg, it seems very much real, more so than all of the other awesome detail. The one thing that keeps popping out at me over and over though, is the bicep on the right most arm, it just seems too big given the rest of the musculature, especially in comparison to the somewhat dwarved deltoid of which it is intertwined with ;).

user
Nevanda (Level 1 Jukyu) @ 6/13/2006 23:10
4 colors  my sweet god...

user
E-Magination (Level 3 Sniper) @ 6/13/2006 06:53
Awesomeness in C64 style-ish. Nicely gradiented.
