Nostalgic indeed.

The pepto palette may be more C64 accurate but it sure makes everything look drab like a rainy day.  I prefer the more saturated colors in this piece but then maybe it's cos I've always preferred the CPC's to the C64.

Nice work on this too.  Makes me nostalgic in 2 ways.  Blocky wide pixels of my CPC and the era of Mario I actually loved playing.

Well done, and fun to look at and remember the old games.

Since I myself am currently working with the C64 palette, trying to get to the bottom of it, I created a comparison between the palette you've used here and the pepto version (before gamma correction is done) linked to by ptoing earlier in the comments here. Just to show how they contrast eachother. Your palette has deviated quite a bit from the original - you got redundant shades, white is grey, etc.

you can count your colours in graphics gale

user
subcon (Level 1 Jukyu) @ 6/1/2008 16:09
same i use that or Paint.Net :]

user
Badassbill (Level 11 Big Foot) @ 6/1/2008 15:52
I don't. I use Graphics Gale Mostly, but I've heard there's a mode in Promotion where you can just put in double wide pixels. You could also run a colour count check.

hello i was wondering if you use a special program to make your C64 art :] thx

user
Badassbill (Level 11 Big Foot) @ 5/16/2008 09:01
If you're using IE you won't see it. I don't know why, but it's only viewable in firefox.

Anyone else having trouble seeing this? I just get a red X in the corner and when i click the picture i get an out of memory message.

Thanks for clarifying that ptoing.

As for the SMW Mario; if I made him thinner it wouldn't look at all like the SMW Mario. I think the only way to make it look more balanced would be to make Yoshi slightly larger.

about the limitations, could'nt mario have been better scaled since he is quite wide in the smw shot with yoshi?

The most factual correct one is the pepto palette as discribed here http://www.pepto.de/projects/colorvic/ I use that one but slightly lighter, but the valueranges kept intact. that one you can take from any of my c64 pictures or from http://www.ptoing.net/c64pal.png (the 2nd ramp with just greys is only what the lightness values of the colours are, for example when watching on a black and white tv)

I've seen a lot of palettes of c64 on the net and I guess I accidentally crossed some over or/and accidentally changed some when colour checking.

ptoing (Level 7 Cuttlefish) @ 5/14/2008 09:47
Well, the palette you used is rather garish, c64 colours would not look like that, not even if you would turn the saturation on your tv way up. Other than that, games are not usually done in mcol bitmap mode, but mcol character mode, which has severe restrictions. Sprites like that would not easily work either. Tho technically this would pretty much not be doable on a c64, with proper scrolling and whatnot. As they are just for fun it does not matter I guess.

Is it a colours on screen issue? Because I'm pretty sure I stayed within 3 colours + black in every 8x8 square. These aren't meant to be playable, they're just still images.

user
ptoing (Level 7 Cuttlefish) @ 5/14/2008 07:24
Looks kinda neat, the colours are rather off tho and it's not really within the limitations of the C64, not even close.

I love stuff like this ... clever use of the limitations!
