Really nice, and clean pixel work on this one. I really admire your restraint; I always tend to overwork things. One area I think could use a touch more detail is his right bicept. Helm added a highlight, but a crease running down from his shoulder would work just as well.
Also, I think ptoing's colour edit is great.
Also, I noticed you use quite desat colours most of the time. Try doing something with really saturated and bright colours sometime. Break out of comfort zone.
Ptoing: (and BlazingBlyde) I tried making the gloves red but i dont thing i can manage it without adding some extra palette values or really dull down the red. i coul dmake the hair more pinkish red so the gloves also have that reddish tinge but i would definitely have to put in another color for the darker values.
That skin colored part was a lat. its been toned down a good bit.
ill admit the hair highlight is silly. thinking of making a slight mod to put the highlight flashes near the front of the blades of hair.
I think youre right in that the rendering benefitted from refinement. my eyes were pretty shot from staring at this for so long , seeing it with fresh eyes helped. (though now theyre shot again)
Im never ok with being 'bad' at something. i recognize i need to work on it amongst basically every other aspect of drawing/painting/pixeling/scripting/brushingteeth/etc. but i accept that im not super amazing at certain things and am resigned to the reality of it. though obviously i still try to be better. surely i hope you know what i mean.
I'll echo the gloves sentiment - I would like to see them be red, since right now red exists exclusively on the headband. Doing so also would help to separate the forms and increase clarity so that the cluster of red is definitively a fist. Great job overall.
This is very similar to how they drew Ryu in the Capcom VS. SNK games.
Very nice sprite overall, tho there are some bits that are a bit odd.
I think as far as colours go it would help to have the glove things be red as well. Might need to minmax some colours for that if you want to keep it at 16.
I do not think you need that non outlined toe on the foot on left, and the foot on the right looks a bit weak in comparison, could need a bit more love.
That skin coloured part at the left, next to the arm. What is that? If it is part of the arm it looks way too big, like steroid abuse weirdness. And it also looks odd as far as being the side of his body would go, as well as his gi only having ripped sleeves and you'd not see the side of the body.
The highlight on the hair is super silly looking, hair does not have specular highlights like that as if they were a solid mass of shiny stuff.
The bridge of his nose and cheek form super hardcore triple line banding.
And I agree with Carnivac that there is inconsistency in the AA (tho I am not saying everything needs to be aa'd to the same amount, just that some bits you left out seem to be odd choices to me.)
If you are bad at dynamic poses you should not be ok with that, you should practise them. Always keep practising, hone you craft, strive to improve. Or stagnate.
There's a certain charm to Capcom's early animations. Remember that ridiculous spinning roundhouse kick when you hit the "strong" button?
I do really like Helm's edit on that thread, though.
If you're happy with it and it does what you wanted that's fine. I just don't understand some things like why there's AA in some places but not in others which could use it and why there's quite a lot of banding in places. Again though the stance really does hurt the character. Even in my own karate class we learn that our ready stance should be ready to block/punch but still relaxed (for quick movement and flexibility) and yet also look somewhat intimidating to our opponent (mainly in competitions.. looking strong and skilled, all that psychological body language stuff). Was it based on the Street Fighter II sprite? Cos Capcom vastly improved the 'shoto' stance for Alpha and SFIII, having his arms in a better position and his legs in a much, much less awkward position. Anyways that's just my crazy thoughts and opinions. I'm not a professional.
@carnivac - I know youre a very opinionated guy and you can say all the words of critique that youd like and i really am too old to take offense to any of it. As far as this work piece is concerned, i think that it is technically one of my best pieces, and i feel very proud of what i accomplished with it. i dont expect everyone to agree or like what ive done. People love ryu and i am trying my best to do it justice. Ive never been the strongest dynamic pose drawer and im ok with that. im just doing the best i can do. All of my older work is largely dependent (overly so perhaps) on AA. Also ill just mention that im making an update upon your suggestion of colors because i agree. My main working monitor is a high gamut monitor and it blows my colors out, so sometimes they appear less vibrant on many other displays. adjusting to make the outfit more 'golden' tinged now.
It looks decent but there are two things I don't much like about it. The stance seems very weak. He seems almost cowering which doesn't suit the powerful warrior that is Ryu. His face too seems unrefined and almost expressionless. Ryu The other thing is the palette seems very drab. When all a character wears is a basic one colour outfit like his white karate gi I feel the skintones need to be bolder for contrast or he just ends up looking very dull. and because of that the red headband seems almost out of place compared to the rest of the colours (which I suppose can be symbolic given the animated movie's explanation of the headband). I don't know what the 'older ryu' title means here. If it means Ryu here is physically older then perhaps it's not that clear in his appearance. Sorry if I sound harsh. I'm just a big fan of the Capcom's 2D sprites particularly of the late 80's and 90's (though Street Fighter IV's 3D is one of the few 3D games I really felt did something interesting with 3D) and I feel you've done a lot better than this in years. And I say that as someone who has a stoven folder on my computer mostly from the old days of Pixelation and your spriteart site.
I think it's the lighting that I like on this piece. The pose and line art were already excellent though.
