Some commission work I did for an Atari ST programmer in the past year.  Basically a Bejewelled clone for the old Atari home computer range using a maximum of 16 colors from the common Atari's 512 palette. Came up with a 16 color palette I felt gave a lot of flexibility for different ramps to give the impression there's a bit more than 16.  The palette was built around getting the 7 gems to look the right colors of the usual recogisable Bejewelled graphics and then the slightly cute medieval setting sorta spawned from that. The programmer seems pretty happy with it so I'm content.  I don't know all the limits of the Atari (was more of an Amiga man) but I enjoyed doing this.  The lil dude sorta grew out of the palette two and the 'castle' theme as a lot of puzzle games have some sort of mascot to get attached to I suppose.  Well.. he fills up that bottom right corner nice enough anyways.

A video of a work in progress build of the game (coin meter isn't working) is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8nCW7obTqE

Hey, that's TWO pieces submitted and it's only March/April.  Wow, if I keep submitting stuff at this rate I may overload PixelJoint!

Jok: oops, didn't notice your message was from 2013! I thought it was from last month

I usually also use Grafx2/Promotion on PC and Dpaint /Synthetic Arts on ST or emulator for the palette tweaks.

I'll stop the off-topic discussion here too :)

exocet: thanks!

- it was year ago, picture for outline was diseaster anyway

i set my workflow alredy to:

grafx2 on mac, dpaint on atari and brilliance on amiga (sometimes promotion on pc) and it works pretty well for me

sorry for spamming here ;)

Carnivac (Level 8 Behemoth) @ 5/24/2014 16:01

Yeah I enjoyed doing it.  Something different for me but still nice and retro.   I haven't heard from the programmer in a while.   Think he wanted me to pixel the lil guy in some different poses but I was pretty busy at the time.

user
exocet (Level 6 Major) @ 5/24/2014 15:16

Jok: you can get Degas Elite XL here

user
exocet (Level 6 Major) @ 5/24/2014 15:11

I saw a video preview of that game a few months ago, didn't know you were behind the graphics. It looks super nice for the ST, you've really done a great job with the limited palette. Can't wait to play the game!

user
Marina (Level 9 Necrophiliac) @ 4/16/2013 07:42

I did not see that before... :O it's amazing what you did with 16 colors

user
Carnivac (Level 8 Behemoth) @ 4/8/2013 07:38

I can't seem to find it on my computer anymore.  You could try asking at atari-forum.com for help with this as there are plenty of Atari experts there including the programmer of this game

user
jok (Level 11 Master Assassin) @ 4/7/2013 09:32

Thanks a lot!!!

But links at program (Degas) page seems dead. Have you, or mentioned programmer a copy maybe?

user
Carnivac (Level 8 Behemoth) @ 4/6/2013 15:10

I didn't know much at the time but the programmer said I could use whatever program I like (I often use a mixture of Pro Motion and Paint Shop Pro 7) and then import the picture into a program called Degas Elite XL which is basically a PC program for Atari graphics or something and it adjusts the colours to match what the Atari actually has.  Some tweaking is necessary to get best results.

looks much nicer than the actual bejeweled in my opinion.  Really nice job with the palette.  Works really good on the bricks.

user
EvilEagles (Level 5 Detective) @ 4/5/2013 21:17

Damn those gems look fabulous. Fantastic job sir. Very reminiscent of Bejeweled XD

user
jok (Level 11 Master Assassin) @ 4/5/2013 13:59

btw, where can i find this st/ste palette? I plan to draw picture for outline demoparty with ste restrictions (320x200x16 from ste palette)

And there is a specific tool for ste gfx?

For me would be prefect to have this palette to work in brilliance or promotion

user
jok (Level 11 Master Assassin) @ 4/5/2013 13:51

 nice

Stickman (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 4/3/2013 17:05

Very nice indeed!

Amazing. Nice colors and idea.

user
Carnivac (Level 8 Behemoth) @ 4/1/2013 12:30

I think the lack of a brown would put some people off.  The palette was mostly designed for this specific project but when pixelling the little scene in the bottom right it made me think it could be suitable for lil platform game or something like that.

user
Carnivac (Level 8 Behemoth) @ 4/1/2013 12:29

Ah you're probably right now I look at it but I don't think it's that bad enough to change things at this stage. Thanks though.

user
ptoing (Level 7 Underboss) @ 4/1/2013 12:12

You did an excellent job stretching those 16 colours. One crit I would have is that the orbs are overaa'd

user
|||| (Level 8 Venus fly trap) @ 4/1/2013 11:22

A new prolific 16 colour palette? Such as the Dawnbringer famous 16 colour palette perhaps.

user

"Atari's 512 palette. Came up with a 16 color palette I felt gave a lot of flexibility for different ramps to give the impression there's a bit more than 16."

And you did just that.

reminds me of gods or magic pockets, great!

user
skittle (Level 9 Nidan) @ 3/31/2013 17:27

Top notch stuff, especially with only 16 colours

user
AtskaHeart (Level 8 Regional Boss) @ 3/31/2013 17:24

 Gorgeous colors and style

user
Pirata (Level 2 Quiet One) @ 3/31/2013 16:23

like this style!

user
Voltali obscur (Level 9 Boss) @ 3/31/2013 16:21

I kinda noticed the irony about how little you were uploading, don't underestimate my lurking power  But I was sincere :p

user
Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 3/31/2013 16:17

Pretty much the jewel in the crown for the last few weeks of pixel art.

whoops.. no pun intended

user
Pandora'sSecret (Level 4 Murderer) @ 3/31/2013 16:03

AS much as I like it, and I really do. It is hard to look at because it's like every piece screams at me LOOT AT ME, LOOK AT ME. Don't know whether that is good or not...

user
surt (Level 11 Godfather) @ 3/31/2013 15:52

I never realized the ST was capable of this quality of visuals.

Love those bricks.

user
ParkerBabyDiaperCompany (Level 2 King Checker) @ 3/31/2013 15:50

Really love how the gems look.
I also like to see you submitting pieces.

user
Carnivac (Level 8 Behemoth) @ 3/31/2013 15:08

hehe. yeah my tag down to 8 pixels high and in using matching colors from this game's palette. it's part of the game assests so i felt like putting it there for fun

user
Hapiel (Level 11 Pixellite) @ 3/31/2013 15:02

i KNEW it was yours when I saw the preview! Oh wait...

Nice, and keep on overloading!

user
Carnivac (Level 8 Behemoth) @ 3/31/2013 13:49

Heh, well it was more of a sarcastic self-deprecating comment on how little I upload stuff (if you look at the dates on my gallery) but thank you

user
Carnivac (Level 8 Behemoth) @ 3/31/2013 13:48

Thanks.  They ain't pearls though so not meant to be completely round.

user
sjhwi1a (Level 4 Mercenary) @ 3/31/2013 13:42

Good use of colors.  Pearls can be more sphere-like.

user
Voltali obscur (Level 9 Boss) @ 3/31/2013 12:44

I wouldn't mind PJ being overloaded with your stuff.

Awesome colors and work on the gems <3

user
Pixelart_kid (Level 6 SWAT) @ 3/31/2013 10:48
