Tool Review: Aseprite – Free Pixel Art Software
Are you a pixel artist? If so, I’d highly recommend checking out Aseprite! It’s simple and robust much like Paint, yet covers a lot of functionality (desperately yearned for in game development..!) that it misses
The interface is a little chunky and its stylization may not be appreciated by everyone, but if you can overlook that, you’re in for an absolute treat. I personally use it for everything pixel-y.
This bad boy’s sporting:
Layers
…easily switched between using the up and down keys.
Out of the way! They live on a teeny-tiny spot on the bottom of the interface.
Animation
…with frames navigated using the left and right keys. Hit enter to play! Prance between eyeballing and tweaking your animation with ease. Set a constant frame rate and/or set a unique frame-specific rate! Add duplicate frames with ease! Cleanly mixes with layers! Onion skinning!
A grid
Toggling, resizing, and snapping! A real joy for creating sprite sheets.
Custom Palettes
Export and import external palettes! Quickly swap them out to see what your sprites’d look like with alternate color schemes.
Transparency
With a nice, obvious checkered background. Like grown-up art programs! Its colors may be changed for the sake of a good contrast, too.
Chrome-Style Tabs
Easily swap between different files within the same instance; handy for cross-referencing existing images.
A fantastic Selection Tool
Overlap existing selections! No more of this “rip each part out and align it again” nonsense. Redrawing a selection with a left-click appends another onto it, while right-clicking takes the chunk out. No joke, this is seriously very welcome. Also, accurate resizing and easy rotations!
If that sounds appealing, I’d recommend nabbing a download.
