The following pixel artists produced Pixel Joint's top rated pixel art for April 2015. Many thanks go out to this month's top pixel artists and all the members who took time to rate.

But it's a great piece. I agree that fan art can be in top - why not? (once again, Pixeljoint is not the App Store).
@andylittle - some would argue that fanart ought to be disqualified from top 10 lists and awards, being essentially unauthorized spins on somebody else's idea, with hardly any creativity involved. What are your thoughts?
I wouldn't call it anarchy, just democracy with a flawed algorithm. Using judges could easily turn it into a matter of personal taste. As for Gods-2, it wasn't eligible for this month, and is currently rising in the May rankings.
I`m not worried about myself - it`s not an app store. I draw for myself and for the improvement of my quality. I'm worrying about others.
I just have noticed that the better works are sometimes not even included in the top 10. So the top 10 rating system is not perfect. Maybe perfect for individual rating, but not for the Top. How many people are professionals from those who choose "like" or "favorite"? I don`t think, that more than 20-30%. It means the anarchy overall rating, but not professional. This is my logical conclusion. In General, I think that only profy can value top 10. This is called - the Judges. With your system of member ranks it may be to implement, but it`s the same thing - anarchy. Best result - the founders of the pixeljoint could choose this 10-20-30 members(Judges) individually without rating mechanics (just look at their works and figure out who the real profy). And then the judges at the end of the month will select the 10 best works (maybe chat or smth like that, discussion or forum topic). I think that only skilled people have to judge and choose the top-10.
About my piece "Gods-2" - maybe it`s not interesting for some people, maybe It was not a suitable time and they have just not see it. A lot of new cheap works are laid out and they quickly push out something worthwhile. Maybe that. You need a new tougher rules for the uploading works. Too many garbage in the newest pixelart category.
Also andylittle, I'm seeing your piece Gods2 stayed below where it deserves, any ideas why that happened?
The top 10 system is not 100% fair but it is less open to abuse than most other systems.
junkboy can have the highest average rating without having the #1 spot, if the other works are rated by more people. so an uninteresting preview or less time on the front page could mean that less people rate a work, but if a work is seen and rated by a bunch of people, it will rise in the rankings, even if they don't rate it as highly.
The places are determined by users' voting--mobocracy.
A bit of a strange appointment of places for my taste :) For example, the work of Junkboy is more delicate done than some of up positions. Just my personal opinion.

@cure - I don't pretend anything :) Just I know, what amount of work was made by junkboy, and it's only 8 place... It's obvious even to the untrained eye.
