The first thing that came to mind though is the texture or the scythe - it's very irregular, when a scythe (at least I think so!) should be a very refined piece of metal, with elegant curves.

Oh yeah I see what you mean. The base idea is correct, yet I still think in execution it's not quite there - why would thicker areas be on the edges of the slime, instead of the center, for instance?

It's fine! A few remarks though:

You abused a little on dithering, it's too visible.

You shaded the tower as if it were a cylinder, when it's actually a square. It should not change color while still on the same face.

The humans look more like zombies tbh. Perhaps avoid using black outside of the global outline, it's too contrasted with the face color.

Also using antialiasing on the global outline is a little weird, especially since it's black. Again, it is so contrasted here it would look better without AA, to clearly separate the sprite from the background.

I hope it makes sense. Otherwise the base line looks fine. :)

I think it looks too obviously mirrored. Besides the symmetrical shading, the middle line where the symmetry axis is is two pixels wide and is really noticeable imo.

Otherwise it's a fantastic piece.
