Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game

It has been announced that Paul Robertson (Probertson) will be in charge of the (pixel) art for the new beat ‘em up game based on the upcoming Scott Pilgrim movie and related graphic novel series.

The game will be released for the Playstation Network on August 10 and for Xbox Live Arcade at an as-of-yet unspecified date. Don’t forget to check out the game's trailer and extra gameplay footage. Also, you can also find the trailer for the accompanying movie here; for everything else Scott Pilgrim related, feel free to click here.

Thanks to Mis-BUG, James McCarter and [thUg] for the heads up on this article.

Isn't this the same guy who called balled about us not accepting his pixel art or something?

Could be a fun game nonetheless, ignoring the graphical style which is kind of meh.

Vertigo-Zero (Level 9 Necrophiliac) @ 7/11/2010 05:45

Yeah I've red an article about the improvements in the panels :)

Blackbeltdude (Level 7 Ichikyu) @ 7/10/2010 20:21

Yeah, I'm actually really enjoying the books too, and I'm waiting for the 20th to roll around just like BOB.

If you're gonna start reading them, it's important to point out that they keep getting progressivley better. The first book can be slightly off-putting near the end, because the pace and tone of the book changle all of a sudden... but the rest of the books are really consistant. At Volume 4, the style gets cleaner, and the panel layout is more streamlined.

I'm sure 6 is gonna rock.

greenraven (Level 2 Hired Gun) @ 7/10/2010 17:11

It's go time lord of the frozen tundra hearts.

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) @ 7/10/2010 16:51

ofcourse that being a fellow pixel artist doesnt grant us free love points.

i hate greenraven but not because of his pixel skills.

Stickman (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 7/10/2010 16:44

I've never heard of the comic books or the film, but that game looks really fun.

The B.O.B. (Level 11 Master Assassin) @ 7/10/2010 15:39

Try reading some Scott Pilgrim books, Vertigo. If you enjoy random non-sense, video-game inside jokes, and silly love stories, it's a fantastic read. Be that as it may, some parts of the story are kind of weird and lacking in some important areas, but it's not enough to stop me from reading it. I currently have all of the volumes and am awaiting the final volume to become available on Amazon.

Vertigo-Zero (Level 9 Necrophiliac) @ 7/10/2010 14:42

I liked Bens sprites better but the game still looks fun (even tho I don't know anything about Scott Pelgrim).

Opacus (Level 7 Ichikyu) @ 7/10/2010 10:41

It's not that I don't like his style, it's that I don't think it's a good fit for Scott Pilgrim. I'd just much rather see Ben2theedge do it. But hey, that ain't happening.

greenraven (Level 2 Hired Gun) @ 7/10/2010 06:44

It was his rotten attitute that people hate, his style is merely a bonus hate point.

Disco (Level 1 Private) @ 7/10/2010 03:45

wow, so much hate towards a fellow pixel artist. People should learn to appreciate talent even if it is not their "style".

Carnivac (Level 8 Behemoth) @ 7/10/2010 03:32

ick, less of the cutesy...

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) @ 7/9/2010 21:46

i'd put konjack in charge of the art of this game, anyday.

Blackbeltdude (Level 7 Ichikyu) @ 7/9/2010 16:00

I totally see what you're saying, but I found the weird and random aspects of Kings of 4 Billion% to be pretty neat (and just looking through his live journal, there's weird stuff that isn't all about nudity and guro). I don't find the tits or the violence edgy, so much as just seeing his pixel work as very distinctive (in themes and pixel style). I guess it's that he typically puts a lot of weird things together in work, and that there's just a lot of juxtopostion in this pieces that I think is neat.

Yeah, I would say his technique isn't too mind blowing, but I'm still a fan of his work (due to his animations and just weird subject matter; it's different).

And now that you guys mention it, I do remember him trying to submit that weird piece you're talking about into the gallery... It's too bad if that's what kind of drove him away, but rejecting it is really understandable. :P

Opacus (Level 7 Ichikyu) @ 7/9/2010 14:50

I'm by far not as excited for the game as I am for that movie.

It looks fucking amazing. I've watched that movie trailer so many times I lost count. Still gotta wait 2 damn months here. Thankfully, there's Toy Story 3, Inception and Predators to keep me busy in ze meanwhile.

Oh and to be honest, I would've loved to see Ben2theedge at the graphics instead of P.Robertson. His style is so overpowering it just looks exactly like Kings of Power 4 bilion or whatever it was, and, well, all his other stuff. Ben just has the style of the comic down better.

Badassbill (Level 11 Psychopath) @ 7/9/2010 11:11

I love you guys so much.

big brother (Level 11 Admiral) @ 7/9/2010 11:06

@-DE-: That doesn't ring a bell. Do you mean the animation of the giant fanged undead penis intestines vomiting nuns turd bloody nazi fetus diaper semen... uh... tits? Given the subject matter, shouldn't we be surprised that he takes it so seriously?

In his defense, he just draws what he sees, man. Interprets the world he lives in. Gives us an opportunity to see through his eyes. If that's not the definition of art, I'm a goose-stepping pixel fascist.

greenraven (Level 2 Hired Gun) @ 7/9/2010 10:59

It also had a giant swastika on it, and let's not forget dick chicks. Yeah, it was an epitome alright.

(Though I suppose on an artistic level he is free to express whatever bullshit ideas he has, regardless of how bullshitty they might be.)

-DE- (Level 11 General) @ 7/9/2010 10:04

Could somebody post the link to his animation of a giant fanged undead penis swallowing shit and crapping bleeding fetuses? That was, like, the epitome of contemporary art! How could it have been rejected?

cure (Level 11 Bonsai) @ 7/9/2010 10:02

His animations are fun and interesting (and I do find them enjoyable to watch), but on a technical level they aren't mindblowing. His concepts really never struck me as weird or especially creative, just a bunch of guro. edgy if it's your fist time seeing blood or tits I guess- but maybe you're referring to less characteristic pieces of his that I'm unfamiliar with.

greenraven (Level 2 Hired Gun) @ 7/9/2010 08:10

Pretty much what captain BABBO said right there. Some of his stuff got sent back, and someone apparently isn't used to dealing with rejection.

The B.O.B. (Level 11 Master Assassin) @ 7/9/2010 01:08

Not sure if it was an ego meltdown, than it was more a misunderstanding. I think he posted some questionable content(not really porn, but pretty close...). We called him on it, and he had a bit of the old "pixel-nazi" hissy fit. I felt a bit of the old smart-ass  hipster vibe from him, but he's probably a cool guy in real life. That's just my opinion, though.

The important thing to remember, is this site doesn't hold any grudge against him, or any popular artist. His account is still active, and if he should ever feel the need to submit art here again, that's fine by us. Though I doubt he will. Any hoo, game looks really neat.

Blackbeltdude (Level 7 Ichikyu) @ 7/9/2010 00:24

Hopefully the ego meltdown you're talking about isn't related to some posts he made about how he liked using lots of colors... cause I don't see that as an ego thing.

I guess his style comes down to a matter of taste; even if you don't like his style, I think it's hard to dismiss his neat weird concepts and really great animations.

slym (Level 8 Rear Admiral) @ 7/8/2010 22:28

Meh he seems a little unliked here and I'm gunna trust that. I don't know the story behind it, but ego meltdowns, that's where I came from. /facepalm it was the world of ego meltdowns and ego wars. Anyway, I'm not really into the style but hey at least there is a game on a modern game console that is pixel art :)

greenraven (Level 2 Hired Gun) @ 7/8/2010 17:41

Wasn't really a big fan of Paul Robertson to begin with, and especially since he came here and had that ego meltdown.

Adarias (Level 11 Bonsai) @ 7/8/2010 14:00

yeah they should have gone with something like which show a lot more tune with the comics and exhibit some better technique, but people wouldn't necessary go LAWL PIXELS RETRO COOL when seeing them...

Blackbeltdude (Level 7 Ichikyu) @ 7/8/2010 13:50

Personally, I've been pretty excited for this game for a while.

The graphics are definitly Robertson's trademark cartoony style, but it lends itself really well to Scott Pilgrim's comic style. The last game that Robertson did and was credited for clearly that I played was Lock's Quest; the animations in that game were all really great (and simple styles are ideal for fluid animations). I think he's done some stuff for WayForward too (I want to say Contra 4; I think I read somewhere that he did some stuff for it... I know Nieborg did amazing work on it at least).

Anamanguchi doing the music is just icing on the cake. :)

-DE- (Level 11 General) @ 7/8/2010 13:07

Has that guy ever done a piece in another style? 'Cause every time I look at new pixelart of his I feel like I have a deja vu a deja vu.

Carnivac (Level 8 Behemoth) @ 7/8/2010 12:49

Dunno if I'll buy this.  Looks like my sorta thing gameplay wise but the graphic style is a bit too cute and offputting for me and I really am not a fan of the graphic novels at all.  Think it depends on pricing and if I got enough people round to wanna play co op often enough to warrant the purchase.

asukicco (Level 9 Necrophiliac) @ 7/8/2010 11:37

And Anamanaguchi did the music, it's worth mentioning.

Badassbill (Level 11 Psychopath) @ 7/8/2010 10:59

It's just a shame Paul Robertson's style is god awful.

skamocore (Level 11 Dolphin) @ 7/8/2010 10:49

Were you thinking of this?

My guess is that it will probably eventually make it to PC.

wenruto (Level 5 Killer Klown) @ 7/8/2010 10:48
