Pixel Art Challenge: Hidden in Geography

icon
Use these simplified shapes of France and Sweden to create something using either Manupix's or Noet's award winning palettes.

In the red corner, we have Manupix's palette, from France.

And over in the blue corner we have Noet's palette, from Sweden.

Special thanks to Jinn for the idea of using country shapes as a pixel art canvas. Here are two examples to illustrate the idea.

Canvas Size
- Use one of the templates above. You may rotate or flip the canvases as long as you don't distort any pixels while transforming the shape ie. you need to just stick to rotating at 90 or 180 degree angles.
Colours - Max 17. Use only colours from your country's palette shown above (plus transparency). So, if you pick Manupix/France, use the first palette; if you pick Noet/Sweden, use the second palette. No palette swapping.
Transparency - Required. Must only be used outside your chosen country's shape.
Animation - Optional.

The challenge thread will have all the challenge updates. The thread is also a great place to post your WIPs.

This would have been a reallllyyy cool collab if it wasn't a challenge. It would be pretty awesome to see the whole world pixeled in this idea.

Noet's palette is a nightmare for me. It's good, no doubt. I just can't handle.

Trick17 (Level 8 Venus fly trap) @ 11/22/2011 02:39

I course you did understand, that was my question

Hm, to bad that I can not put some holes into sweden.

user
slym (Level 8 Ruby) @ 11/21/2011 18:44

THAT IS SO COOL Just made my life.

user
cure (Level 11 Pixellite) @ 11/21/2011 18:30

I don't understand the question. transparency is required outside the shape. the shape itself must be composed of opaque pixels of any color from the respective palette. there can be no transparent pixels within the shape.

user
Trick17 (Level 8 Venus fly trap) @ 11/21/2011 17:52

Can I remove some pixels inside the shape?

user

@Frost: LOL!

I'm starring myself blind already looking for figures. I'm really curious what people will come up with. I might give it a go.

@Frost: Haha...can't believe that has never occured to me :D

user
Frost (Level 6 Serial Killer) @ 11/21/2011 14:46

If you add Finland to Sweden, the motif is pretty much set!

user
skamocore (Level 11 Dolphin) @ 11/21/2011 14:19

=( Once again, I'm so sorry if anyone feels I've defaced France and Sweden. Basically, I tried to smooth things out as much as could just to make the outlies easier to use.

If it helps, I was inspired by X-Com's very minimalist map contours...

user
DawnBringer (Level 10 Pixel artist) @ 11/21/2011 13:59

@Tomic: Yeah that must be it, haha! So where did they stuff Corsica?

user
tomic (Level 11 Admiral) @ 11/21/2011 13:53

@dawnbringer+reo: i suspect they used the island to fill these 2 holes.. ehm, transparent areas in your contry.. vänern+vättern, right? :D

user
Ego (Level 6 Commander) @ 11/21/2011 13:43

Awesome, thanks. This looks quite fun and the palettes are very interesting, hopefully I'll have a good idea for this!

user
Reo (Level 11 Sphinx) @ 11/21/2011 13:03

Correct.

user
Ego (Level 6 Commander) @ 11/21/2011 12:51

Been a while since I've done one of these, max 17 colors is just a maximum, I don't need to use every color there, correct?

user
DawnBringer (Level 10 Pixel artist) @ 11/21/2011 12:39

@Tomic: We don't get Gotland and Öland...France don't get Corsica ;)

user
showtime (Level 6 Made) @ 11/21/2011 11:35

Wow, this is a really awesome challenge!

user
tomic (Level 11 Admiral) @ 11/21/2011 10:41

hey, what happened to corsica? :)

nice challenge, i see faces :P

user
skamocore (Level 11 Dolphin) @ 11/21/2011 08:16

No distorting, these are the shapes. You can only flip the countries or rotate them by 90/180 degree angles

user
offwhite (Level 5 Assistant Manager) @ 11/21/2011 05:59

:D Loooove challenge!

How strict are you going to be about not "distorting" any pixels on the countries? For example, is it allowed to remove 3-4 pixels from a corner to smoothen it out?

user
DawnBringer (Level 10 Pixel artist) @ 11/21/2011 02:52

Really nice challenge! :) ...wish I had time to participate.

user
skamocore (Level 11 Dolphin) @ 11/21/2011 01:13

I sorry :'(

I take full responsibilty for any geography which has been butchered D:

user
Manupix (Level 11 Godzilla) @ 11/21/2011 01:01

Wow cool!!! Got to give a try to Noet's :)

Of course this happens on one of the busiest weeks for a long time for me :(

Also, what happened to Cotentin

Also also, what happened to the smileys in the palette award news post

user
tanuki (Level 1 Seaman) @ 11/21/2011 00:39

Also, I don't know how to use sweden's palette, so I think I'll try that.

...crazy palette

user
jeremy (Level 11 Sphinx) @ 11/21/2011 00:15

Yes.

user
tanuki (Level 1 Seaman) @ 11/21/2011 00:10

"So, if you pick Noet/Sweden, use the first palette; if you pick Manupix/France, use the second palette."

I think that's backwards.
