CHALLENGE: Good Day / Good NightThis week you are challenged to depict the same scene twice in one submission; both parts should be set on the same day - however, one part will be at night and the other during the day. You may present this any way you want, as long as both versions of the scene are present in the one submission. Consider how each time of day will affect the scene. CHALLENGE RULES

Do the scenes have to be from the same view? Could they just be the same place?

@coreyh2: That's a good question. Although I can't answer that, I would suggest for clarity reasons that the view stay generally similar. If it's too skew, it might seem totally unrelated.
@Jeremy: Dang, you're really good at landscapes O.o As for the dunes, this is the best help I can really give, which you have access to yourself anyways :P. Here's a Fire Emblem desert background, which I've always admired along with the other backgrounds in that game. Ignore the comic, that's the only one I could find... |

Update on my WIP...probably complete but might modify the brightness of a few colors a tiny bit or something to smooth out the shading but thats probably about it.
Used all 25 colors now and im pretty happy with it.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

In Slaughterism's picture
I think the girl should be bigger. She is the most interesting part of the image. I'd focus more on her and less on the tree, sky, and layers of earth.

still a WIP though, I can seem to imagine what suitable landscape this should be. . . I can decide whether its a desert, a forest or a village question: should white be considered as a color enumerated in the 25 max colors or not? |

I've done a major improvement to the night scene but am still stuck on the sun scene. Any hints on what to shadow there? I shadowed the cloud and sun but they came out pretty crappy if I do say so myself.

@ HCGamer -
Clouds are boring... Take a look at post above yours to get an idea of what it might look like (not trying to sound egotistical or anything xD). The sun is rather unrealistic and not very circular. The sun produces the light that we get, so it should not have a shadow, if you get my drift :P And rays would make it more interesting, take a look at Caineghis' post a few comments above to get an idea. And saturate the sun, and make it slightly orange. Adjust hues and such always makes a piece more interesting. Also, the hills are not very consistant, the second farthest is darker than the 3rd farthest. The flowers could do with some shadows on the ground, along with some more character. Make each one different! Or at least some different :> Moon is very jagged. Try to make most of it one colors, AA the edges with the lighter one, and add another darker mid shade for more AA. Then, go back and add a bit of texture with the lighter one. Just some circles would be enough. The stars are too evenly spread out. If you look at the sky (although you really can't see the stars if you live near a city), you will notice that the stars are placed randomly, so that some of them are close, and one star could be alone, far away from the others. And it's OK to have a star touching the hills, the moon, or the border/edge. It's more natural. As for the hills, the aren't very round, and they are sort of jagged. The darkest hill's color clashes with the sky too. Try to pick a different one, and maybe give it a more mystical color, or slightly yellow. It's a bit plain and boring at the moment. Here are some pieces that show what I'm talking about. And flowers don't randomly disappear when it comes to night. Another Quick update ![]() Comments, critiques, advice? |

I'd think of this challenge like a 2 panel comic. You want to show a story and some well drawn lighting and shadows.
I'm still thinking :| |

Thanks for the tips. Btw, you're supposed to assume that he peeks out at the flowers in the day, he's there at night and the flowers are gone, he obviously picked them. I guess I should have put some in his hand.

Okay, I've done a few hours of improvements so here's my latest WIP. I'm not completely happy with my day scene, because of the sun and cloud, but my night scene is pretty good now. Oh, and I am now a midshipman!! Yay!! lol

@jalonso >You are for real and soon to be feared!!! Well, I... naw, I... awwwww.... (blushes). Do not fear me--I have chosen to use my powers FOR GOOD. If anybody asks. Huge canvases, you say? 256 x 192, according to Wikipedia, the infallible repository of all human wisdom, is the resolution of a single Nintendo DS screen. And the DS is a handheld. And everybody knows handhelds have small screens; therefore 256 x 192 must be SMALL. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. |

Okay, I think I'm done.
When you're scared of the dark, as I was when I was a kid, the change from daytime to nighttime means that even your own bedroom stops being a place of safety. (And I'm a grown man, but I admit it--even now, when I turn the basement light out, I get the heck out of there.) |

Okay, here are two versions of my scene, tell me which one you like more. I like the second one, but it feels maybe a bit too blue. Or is that okay? I'm so confused.

But this is work in progress, still subject to change ;) "This week you are challenged to depict the same scene twice in one submission; both parts should be set on the same day - however, one part will be at night and the other during the day." In my opinion, that's bending the rules a bit too much. The point of the challenge is to show one scene during the day, and same scene at night time. Not a transition from day to night although it does look pretty cool. You could either make it follow the rules or you could continue it and not make it for the challenge. Either way, it'd look good :) |

I mean having the day side mirrored to the night side - still don't want to have straight line separating both parts. Or I might ditch it as a challenge submission and go on with the idea as you suggested. Still have spare idea for the challenge ;) Edited by Ixolite - 24 April 2010 at 1:48pm |

@ HCGamer, or for that matter, anybody else:
>Hey! I smell a cheater here! I'm sure I read somewhere that there are no professionals allowed! Is this a real rule? I tried to find it in the FAQs, and couldn't. I DO do this stuff for a living, so if that's a real rule I should withdraw the piece from the challenge. Apologies if I'm breaking the rules. |

can somebody tell me why this didn't get enough points to be added to the galery for the contest?
I personally dont see anything wrong with it, and mine is definantly not best nor worst for the contest (I mean no offence) but all the other submissions that I know of have been added. Did I do something incorrect cause I only have a day to fix stuff.
EDIT: only 15 colors used if that helps. Edited by crozier - 24 April 2010 at 5:18pm |

@cozier -
Well I'm sorry to say, even if I agree with it, that "best nor worst" thing you just said is just an opinion, and, of course opinions conflict with one another. Apparently too many mods didn't think yours was ready, so they didn't let you in. Sorry, and better luck next time. :) Now to help you a little: One big thing: contrast. Without contrast, I have to look closley to see what is going on. Another big thing: Reasonable line art. Try making it a little bit more... well... correct. Keep try, keep try. :) |
